Why Learn a foreign language?

Business and economics:

In the new gloabl market economy, more and more businesses are expanding their sales branches, opening new manufacturing facilities and working closely with foreign suppliers and customers. No matter what career you choose, if you learn a foreign language, you will have a competitive advantage over people in your field who do not.

Diplomacy and Politics:

Recent events in the mid-east stress the importance for Americans to open themselves to other cultures and learn foreign languages. We are one of the few nations in the world that fail to stress the importance of foreign language training.

Social and cultural reasons:

Many people living in the United states today do not speak English and may encouter problems communicating with a doctor, a nurse, a judge or the police.
Based on recent statistics, as much as fifty percent of our population growth is the result of immigration, mostly from Third World countries. Moreover, our Spanish-speaking population is expected to continue to grow at a faster rate, and is now the largest minority group in the nation.

Travel and Tourism:

If you travel to a foreign country, you will be able to communicate easily with people you meet and your trip will be greatly enhanced. You will also be able to better understand the culture and traditions of the country by speaking to its people in their native language.
